Sabr & Trust in Allah PDF Print E-mail

All praise is for Allah, Lord of the Worlds, who ordered us to follow His Messenger  and to call us to His Way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family, his companions, and those who truly follow them until the Day of Judgement. To proceed: As salaamu alaykunna wa rahmatulah Beloved sisters, May Allah grant you and I success, know that sabr is from emaan  (1)  and it is coupled with reliance and trust upon our Rabb (2) , and this is what Allah says of the believers in the Qur'aan;

"(They are) those who remained patient (in this world for Allah's sake), and put their trust in their Lord (Allâh Alone)". (An-Nahl 16:42) meaning, they bore their people's persecution with patience, putting their trust in Allah Who made their end good in this world and the Hereafter.

 "And in Allah (Alone) let the believers put their trust.And why should we not put our trust in Allâh while He indeed has guided us our ways. And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (Alone) let those who trust, put their trust." (Ibrahim 14:11-12) such as foolish actions and abusive statements

Truly many of us face obstacles and tests in our daily lives, and may struggle with having sabr upon those difficulties.  But when they do come, they should not come as a surprise, as Allah informs us;

"And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.). Hence, He tests them with the bounty sometimes and sometimes with the afflictions of fear and hunger.

He then explained whom He meant by `the patient' whom He praised:

 Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! To Allâh we belong and truly, to Him we shall return."  (Al-Baqarah 2:155-156)

This is why Allah said They are those on whom are the Salawat (i. e., who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His mercy,) meaning, Allah's praise and mercy will be with them. Sa`id bin Jubayr added, "Meaning, safety from the torment.''(and it is they who are the guided ones.) `Umar bin Al-Khattab commented: "What righteous things, and what a great heights. (They are those on whom are the Salawat from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His mercy) are the two righteous things. (and it is they who are the guided ones) are the heights.'' The heights means more rewards, and these people will be awarded their rewards and more.

There are several Ahadith that mention the rewards of admitting that the return is to Allah by saying: ("Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.'') when afflictions strike. For instance, Imam Ahmad reported that Umm Salamah narrated: Once, Abu Salamah came back after he was with Allah's Messenger and said: I heard Allah's Messenger recite a statement that made me delighted. He said: (No Muslim is struck with an affliction and then says Istirja` when the affliction strikes, and then says: `O Allah! Reward me for my loss and give me what is better than it,' but Allah will do just that.) Umm Salamah said: So I memorized these words. When Abu Salamah died I said Istirja` and said: "O Allah! Compensate me for my loss and give me what is better than it.'' I then thought about it and said, "Who is better than Abu Salamah'' When my `Iddah (the period of time before the widow or divorced woman can remarry) finished, Allah's Messenger asked for permission to see me while I was dyeing a skin that I had. I washed my hands, gave him permission to enter and handed him a pillow, and he sat on it. He then asked me for marriage and when he finished his speech, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! It is not because I do not want you, but I am very jealous and I fear that you might experience some wrong mannerism from me for which Allah would punish me. I am old and have children.'' He said:(As for the jealousy that you mentioned, Allah the Exalted will remove it from you. As for your being old as you mentioned, I have suffered what you have suffered. And for your having children, they are my children too.) She said, "I have surrendered to Allah's Messenger.'' Allah's Messenger married her and Umm Salamah said later, "Allah compensated me with who is better than Abu Salamah: Allah's Messenger .'' Muslim reported a shorter version of this Hadith.

 Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)? (Aali Imran 3:142) meaning, you will not earn Paradise until you are tested and thus Allah knows who among you are the ones who struggle and fight in His cause and are patient in the face of the enemy

And when they do come to past,  we should not become perturbed,  show dissatisfaction or become perplexed, but show enduring patience. Take this example: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated that said Ibn Jubayr said: "Endurance is an expression of the servant's acknowledgement to Allaah of what has befallen him, hisbelief that it was preordained by Him and his anticipation to Allah of what has befallen him, his belief that it was preordained by Him and his anticipation of a reward for his steadfastness. A man may be frightened but he remains steadfast and only endurance shows on him." (3)

And remember what Luqman said to his son; "And bear with patience whatever befalls you." (Luqman 31:17) (and bear with patience whatever befalls you.) Luqman knew that whoever enjoins what is good and forbids what is evil, will inevitably encounter harm and annoyance from people, so he told him to be patient.Verily, these are some of the important commandments.) means, being patient when people cause harm or annoyance is one of the most important commandments.

Much benefit lies with having sabr, note this statement of Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, “The occurrence of afflictions are actually a form of blessing, since they are an expiation for sins committed and they call for a person to have sabr - for which he is duly rewarded. Likewise they cause the person to turn to Allaah in repentance, being humble and submissive before Him, whilst at the same time turning away from hoping in any of the creation. There are - besides these - other great advantages. (4) "So be patient, with a good patience." (Al-Ma'arij 70:5) Did you know that from one of the three characteristics of happiness is that when one is tested they remain patient? (5),

Muhammad bin 'Abdil-Wahhaab  said in a treatise, "Being patient during tribulations, hard times and with the things that one hates, which befall people as a test and examination from Allah. What is obligatory in these situations is that one has patience. Patience means suppressing the heart from being displeased and from despairing; suppressing the tongue from complaining and suppressing the limbs from those acts that negate and contradict patience" . (6)

So when you are advised, again and again and again to remain steadfast,  and you hear the words patience and sabr and perseverence and fortitude and endurance and having tawwakul constantly ringing in your ears, from your zowj, from your companions,  from the people of ilm in the various texts & audios, reflect on what follows again & again:  "O you who believe! Endure and be more patient ....." .Aali Imran (3):200

And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah) ! (Al-Muddaththir 74:7) meaning, make your patience with their harms be for the Face of your Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. This was stated by Mujahid. Ibrahim An-Nakha`i said, "Be patient in your giving for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.'' "And be patient; verily, Allah loses not the reward of the good-doers." (Hud 11:115)

Whatever is with you, will be exhausted, and whatever with Allâh (of good deeds) will remain. And those who are patient, We will certainly pay them a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do. (An-Nahl 16:96) Here the Lord swears, with the Lam of affirmation, that He will reward the patient for the best of their deeds, i.e., He will forgive them for their bad deeds.

Umar bin Al-Khattab (radihiallaahu 'anhu)  said that he heard the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) say, "If you trusted in Allah as He should be trusted, He would guarantee your provision as He provides for the birds, they leave hungry and return full." (7) And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose.

Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things. (At-Talaq 65:3) Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that he rode the Prophet's camel while sitting behind the Prophet , and the Messenger of Allah said to him,  (O boy! I will teach you words [so learn them]. Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you, be mindful of Allah and He will be on your side. If you ask, ask Allah, and if you seek help, seek it from Allah. Know that if the Ummah gather their strength to bring you benefit, they will never bring you benefit, except that which Allah has decreed for you. Know that if they gather their strength to harm you, they will never harm you, except with that which Allah has decreed against you. The pens have been raised and the pages are dry.) At-Tirmidhi collected this Hadith and said: "Hasan Sahih.'' Allah's statement, (Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose.) meaning, Allah will execute His decisions and judgement that He made for him, in whatever way He wills and chooses, (Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things.) This is like His saying:(Everything with Him is in (due) proportion.) (13:8).

Narrated Ibn Abbas (radihiallaahu 'anhu)  "Allah(Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us), " was said by Ibrahim (alayhi salaam) when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) when they  (i.e hypocrites) said, "Verily the people (pagans) have gathered againest you (a great army),  therefore, fear them, but it only increased them in Faith". (7) "And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were patient." (Al-Insan 76:12)

 "Salamun 'Alaikum (peace be upon you) for that you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!" (Ra'd 13:24) (And angels shall enter unto them from every gate (saying): "Salamun `Alaykum (peace be upon you) for you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!'') The angels will enter on them from every direction congratulating them for entering Paradise. The angels will welcome them with the Islamic greeting and commend them for earning Allah's closeness and rewards, as well as, being admitted into the Dwelling of Peace, neighbors to the honorable Messengers, the Prophets and the truthful believers.

Take heed and know that the promise of Allah is true.    "Allah's promise is the Truth, and whose words can be truer than those of Allah? (Of course, none)." (An-Nisa 4:122)  Allah's promise is the truth), meaning, this is a true promise from Allah, and verily, Allah's promise shall come to pass. Allah then said, (and whose words can be truer than those of Allah) meaning, none is more truthful in statement and narration than Allah. There is no deity worthy of worship, or Lord except Him. The Messenger of Allah used to proclaim in his speech, (The most truthful speech is Allah's Speech, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst matters are the newly invented (in religion), every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is a heresy, and every heresy is in the Fire.)

Insha'allah this was of some benefit as I am in need of these reminders myself which is why I chose this topic. Insha'allah please read  Where Patience is Mentioned in the Quraan . I leave you with this, Being patient, just as the poet said:“Patience is like its name - bitter in taste, yet its outcomes are sweeter than honey.” (8)

Please forgive me if I have erred, and hasten to correct me if I have done so.Anything good is from Allaah, anything bad from myself and the accursed shaitan. UmmIdris(Kareema) Subhanaka 'allahumma wa bihamdika 'ash hadu 'alla 'ilaha 'illa 'anta astaghfiruka wa 'atubu 'ilayka
